Herman family correspondence [manuscript], 1902-1923.

The collection contains letters to and from family members about current activities including a train trip to Hot Springs and a stay there; a snow storm and sleigh riding in Waynesboro, Va.; canning peaches; shopping in Philadelphia; and learning to drive a "flivver," a buggy ride in the rain and a high creek; and younger children's complaints about chores when older children are absent. The poem "I arise from dreams of thee" by Shelley is copied out and included.

Arthur Herman is an historian and author. He received his doctorate in history at Johns Hopkins University. He is the coordinator of the Western Heritage Program at the Smithsonian Institution, and was an associate professor of history at George Mason University .
